“We have 75 to 100 kids come through the door every day—and each one has an internet connected device.”
Scott McIntosh, the Executive Director for the Elk Grove Teen Center USA, shared about the difference having fast and reliable internet access will make in fulfilling the Center’s commitment to “creating a place where every young person can easily realize their value and potential.”
Many of those young people participated in the festivities, on December 8 – 10, celebrating the activation of high-speed fiber broadband that will help make the Center’s programs more effective, engaging and empowering. One of those programs, Homework Help, provides interested students with tutoring in Spanish, Biology, English, Chemistry, Psychology, Astronomy and History. “Having fiber-optic tech from Frontier will help us in so many ways,” said McIntosh, “Frontier’s investment in the teen center and our kids means the world to me.”
Fulfilling His Dream to Further Their Dreams
McIntosh grew up Elk Grove, California, a small city located just 15 miles south of Sacramento with picturesque wineries and a population nearing 200,000. “It’s always been a dream of mine to serve my community and the next generation coming up, and it’s such a blessing to do that in a place where I grew up,” he said.
The Center has been serving teens since 1990, providing core development building blocks for their mental, physical, social and spiritual well-being. Guided by the mantra, “Make a Difference. Be the Change,” hundreds of area youth are being equipped with the necessary tools to build great character.
It was this 30+ year devotion and support of its community that made the Center a great candidate for Broadband for Good, our first social impact program developed to advance our purpose: Building Gigabit America. By using our fiber technology and resources—what we like to think of as our superpower—to connect more people to the digital society, the program represents our commitment to accelerating digital inclusion.
